Alessandro Mantelero is Associate Professor of Private Law and Law & Technology at the Polytechnic University of Turin. From 2021 to 2025, he held the EU Jean Monnet Chair in Mediterranean Digital Societies & Law.
He is a member of the EDPB Support Pool of Experts and the OECD.AI Expert Group on AI, Data, and Privacy. He also acts as a scientific advisor to the United Nations Development Programme (UNPD) on human rights and AI, and to INTERPOL on data protection and AI.
He has advised numerous organisations and governments on data regulation, AI, and human rights. These include the Council of Europe, the United Nations, the European Commission, the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights, the Brazilian Senate, the Italian government, the government of the Dominican Republic, the government of Catalonia and the Catalan Data Protection Authority.
Professor Mantelero is a member of the European Law Institute’s Sub-Group on AI and has held visiting positions at various academic institutions, including the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, the Oxford Internet Institute, the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, the Ada Lovelace Institute, and the Universidad de Murcia. His latest books are Beyond Data. Human Rights, Ethical and Social Impact Assessment in AI (Springer-Asser, 2022, open access) and Mediterranean Digital Societies. Law and Technology (Hart Publishing, 2025, forthcoming).
