Every day, key pieces of information are shared by national police officials at an international level to combat crime, thanks to INTERPOL. Now, these operations also involve the use of AI. For this reason, on 17 December 2025, the Committee on the Processing of Data adopted new principle-based provisions on data processing using AI, as well as a definition of AI systems.

It has been a great opportunity for me to be the scientific advisor of INTERPOL for this task. As has been emphasised several times, providing policy advice is the most effective way for academics to influence society.

Working on the amendment to the INTERPOL’s Rules on the Processing of Data for over a year has been an incredibly enriching experience. Although I was familiar with international organisations, due to previous similar work as a scientific advisor, it was fascinating to enter the logic of INTERPOL data processing and work with an organisation that includes 196 member countries worldwide.

As always, it was stimulating to combine legal expertise, innovative regulatory solutions and diverse issues raised by representatives from various countries. This would not have been possible without the great professionals I met at the INTERPOL Executive Directorate of Legal Affairs and in the other branches of the organisation, and their high level of commitment to fighting international crime, along with all the country representatives.
