General course
objectives:
The structural
teaching during the second part of the first year of the BSc Course in
Architectural Sciences aims to put in place an effective synergy and knowledge
transfer between the structural teaching and the design of architecture in
terms of safety, reliability, durability of constructions but also to cite or
create suitable and expressive structural forms. This principle is concretized
in an extended contribute of the structural teacher, as for other teachers from
the doctrines of technology, history and drawing of architecture, in the frame
of the studio design teaching. Such contributions are developed under the form
of both ex cathedra lessons about themes and applications related with the ones
of the studio design, and tutoring and assistance along the different phases of
the architectural design developed by the students.
Content of the ex cathedra lessons:
-
Multidisciplinary lessons about an actual architecture: the structural
concept design.
-
Loads on buildings. Classification and reference values. Snow and wind
loads.
-
Sizing criteria for beams and column made of reinforced concrete, steel
or wood.
-
Spatial behaviour of buildings: placing and sizing criteria for lateral
systems.
-
Analysis of an existing three-floor building for habitat: in-situ cast
r.c. framed structure.
-
Analysis of an existing industrial building: steel trussed structure.
-
Ad hoc lessons on the specific structural typologies requested year-by-year in
the architectural design.
-
Guidelines and example for the preparation of the final plan devoted to
the structural concept design and analysis of the students’ architectural
design.
