The School/Workshop is supported by GNSAGA-INdAM and by Dipartimento di Matematica-Università di Torino and Dipartimento di Matematica-Università di Ferrara, in the framework of the Project "Geometry on Algebraic Varieties" cofinanced by Italian MIUR.

General informations on the School.
The school will take place at

Dipartimento di Matematica
Politecnico di Torino Duca degli Abruzzi 24
10129 Torino - Italy

It is mainly aimed to Phd students and young researchers in Algebraic Geometry.

General informations on the Workshop.
A Workshop/Open problems session is planned on September 17th (afternoon) and 18th (morning). The aim of the Workshop is to discuss the state of art. At today the following speakers have confirmed their participation: E. Carlini, C. Ciliberto, C. Folegatti, A. Geramita, A. Gimigliano, L. Ugaglia, S. Yang. Interested people are kindly requested to submit the title and an abstract of their Communication within August 31st to

Aim of the School.
The School is mainly aimed to Phd students and young researchers in Algebraic Geometry introducing the participants to research, beginning from a basic level with a view towards the applications and to the most recent results. A tentative program is as follows.
The Riemann-Roch problem for linear systems with prescribed base conditions. Theorems and conjectures. Deformation methods, degeneration methods, linear algebra methods, relationship to approximation theory, splines, finite elements and interpolation, Waring's problem and defectivity.
Secant varieties of projective varieties. Tangent spaces to secant varieties: Terracini's lemma. Connections with interpolation problems and decomposition of products. Entry locus and the infinitesimal Bertini's principle. Defects and singular defects. Classification methods: the case of surfaces and threeefolds. Very defective varieties, Severi varieties, Zak's theorem and extensions.

The School will start on Monday,15th at 13.00 and it will end on Saturday, 20th at 12.00. Workshop will start on Wednesday 17th at 14.00 and it will end on Thursday 18th at 12.00. On Wednesday evening a social dinner open to the participants of the School/Workshop will be organized.

Financial supports for participants.
Unfortunately we cannot offer any financial support. The participants from EU and associated countries may apply to their home nodes of EAGER network for financial support. Analogously, members of Italian GNSAGA-INdAM may apply to that Institution for financial support.
