About Me

I am Associate Professor of Structural Mechanics at the Department of Structural, Geotechnical and Building Engineering, Politecnico di Torino (Italy).

I am married with Antonella and father of Nicoletta.

I like scuba diving.

Research

I am interested on continuum mechanics, computational mechanics, nonlinear finite element method, fracture mechanics, dam behavior and, recently, snow avalanches dynamics.

Non-conservative Continuum Mechanics/Fracture Mechanics Study of concrete structures under constant and cyclic loading. The non linear behavior of concrete-like materials in tension is characterized by the localization of strain (strain-softening); this phenomenon can be analyzed through the cohesive crack model which uses the length of the fictitious crack as a control variable. The phenomena analyzed are the size-related phenomenon of bifurcation of equilibrium path, the interaction of viscous phenomena and crack growth (Mode I and Mixed Mode conditions), the impact behavior of concrete (high strain/stress rates) carried out in cooperation with the Department of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of Delft University (The Netherlands).

Dynamics of Snow Avalanches This activity refers to the numerical simulation of the dynamics of powder and dense snow avalanches to assess the influence of such events on existing buildings and to produce design guidelines for structures with respect to avalanches hazard. The development and maintenance of an instrumented test site for natural and artificial avalanches (see project DYNAVAL and project MAP3) and the development of a new device for measuring the shear strength of snow specimens in situ are the most important results of this research.

Dam safety This study is related to seismic analysis for dam safety, estimation of seismic hazards, analysis of expected performance during earthquakes, two and three dimensional finite element modeling and constitutive modeling of materials and joints behavior.

See the resume above for the list of publications (and much more).

Teaching

In the past years, I taught Theory of Elasticity, Structural Mechanics and Advanced Structural Mechanics.

Currently, I am teaching Fundamentals of Structural Analysis and Structural Mechanics, Architecture (Torino) and Structural Mechanics, Turin Polytechnic University in Tashkent (Uzbekistan).

In the first semester of 2019, I cooperated with Dan Crocker of DC Structures Studio (Cambridge, NZ); see the results of a bridge contest here.
