| Academic career Born in Bari (Italy) on May 7, 1966. April 1991: Master degree in Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Bari (score 110/110 cum laude). Winner of the prize “Ing. Vito Sardone”, by the Technical University of Bari. January 1995: Ph.D. in Structural Engineering at Politecnico di Torino discussing the thesis: “Influence of microstructural disorder on the mechanical properties of heterogeneous materials” (supervisor: Prof. Alberto Carpinteri). March-November 1995: visiting researcher at the Dept. of Civil Engineering, Technical University of Delft, (ref. Prof. J.G.M. Van Mier). 1995-1998: Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at Politecnico di Torino. 1998-2001: Associate Professor of Structural Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at Politecnico di Torino. 2002- : Full Professor of Structural Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at Politecnico di Torino. Academic roles 2000-2002: Representative member in the Executive Board of the Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering of Politecnico di Torino. 2003-2005: Deputy Dean at the Faculty of Engineering at Politecnico di Torino. 2005- : Vice-rector of Politecnico di Torino, responsible for Educational Programs and Faculty Activities. 2005- : Member of the Board of Politecnico di Torino 2007- : Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, International Telematic University UNINETTUNO, in Rome 2010- : Member of the Evaluation Board of Politecnico di Torino. He is responsible for the educational programs (from undergraduate to master level) of Politecnico, both in the principal seats of Torino and in the regional seats. He works for the qualification of the Course programs in the Faculties of Politecnico, for the internationalisation of the curricula and for the improvement of the tutoring, counseling and cultural activities for students. He is also in charge of life-long learning, e-learning programs and special educational projects proposed by the Faculties. As a member of the university board, he is dealing with the Strategic Plan of Politecnico di Torino, strictly related to the strategic plan of the City of Torino. 2007- : Coordinator of the project "Italian Technical University in Pakistan (UESTP)", sponsored by the High Education Commission of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 2009- : Coordinator of the Committee for the Creation of the Politecnico di Torino branch in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, sponsored by the Uzbekistan Government and by General Motors. Scientific activity Author of more than 140 scientific publications on subjects of Structural Engineering, Materials Engineering and Fracture Mechanics. In particular, 45 papers have been published on the most important Journals of the field. The principal topics investigated are: a) damage and fracture of structural materials and rocks; b) influence of concrete microstructure on its mechanical properties; c) assessment of strength, ductility and robustness of structures; d) mechanics of structures: size effects, safety and collapse of large engineering structures; e) contact mechanics, tribology, adhesion and friction between rough surfaces, f) penetration mechanics in civil and oil applications; g) demolition of civil and industrial buildings, cutting of stones and masonry at archaeological sites; g) biomechanics (soft tissues, skin elasticity and lung mechanics); h) snow avalanche mechanics and protection. Since 2007, member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal "The Open Construction & Building Technology Journal" of Bentham Science Publisher. Actively involved in the principal International Conferences. Invited speaker or keynote speaker in many Conferences as, for instance, the Conferences of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) in Kyoto (1996) and Chicago (2000), the Conferences of the European Materials Society (EUROMAT) in Perm-Russia (1997) and Monaco (1999) and the International Conference of Computational Mechanics at MIT (2005). Regularly participating to the most important Italian Conferences in the fields of Structural Engineering and Solid Mechanics as, for instance, the Italian Association of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (AIMETA) and the Italian Group of Fracture (IGF), where he is has been a member of the Directive Board. He has been invited to give lectures in prestigious Universities and Schools, such as: 1) Technical University of Delft (Holland); 2) Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale of Zurigo (Switzerland); 3) University of Munich (Germany); 4) Kyoto University (Japan); 5) Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (Spain); 6) University of Xi’an (China); 7) Ecole Nationale Superieure de Cachan (France); 8) Cambridge University (England); 9) M.I.T. (USA); 10) Imperial College (UK); 11) Advanced School on Scaling Laws and Continuum Mechanics, CISM (Udine). Organizer of the Conference “Design of Architecture and Interoperability”, on the topic of software interoperability in the field of architectural and structural design of buildings, held in Turin on July 3, 2008, within the XXIII World Conference of Architecture (UIA 2008) in Turin. Evaluator and referee activity From 2005, member of the "Expert Evaluators Panel" of the European Commission, Research Directorate - VI and VII FP (Area NMP-NI-4 - New Construction Products and Processes for High Added Value applications and Area ENV.2010.3.1.3-1 Environment). From 2005, member of the "Evaluator-Referee Panel" for CIVR (Italian Committee For Research Evaluation) - Panel 08 and 09 (Civil and Industrial Engineering). From 2006, member of the Evaluators Panel of the Public Housing Company (Agenzia Territoriale della Casa, ATC) of the Torino province. From 2007, member of the Expert Panel of CRUI for the assignement of funds in the framework of the project TRIS (Research Technicians for Southern Italy) funded by CIPE.
