Alessandro Mantelero is Associate Professor of
Private Law at the
Polytechnic
University of Turin
and legal expert on big data regulation at SmartData@PoliTO Center . He is Council of Europe Rapporteur
on Artificial Intelligence and data protection. In 2016, he was
appointed expert consultant by the Council of Europe to draft the Guidelines on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data in a world of Big Data (2017). He has served as an
expert on data protection, Big Data and AI for the UN–International Labour
Organization, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, the Office of
the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Italian
Ministry of Justice and the Italian Communications Authority (AGCOM). He has published three books and is author of over a hundred articles and book chapters on law & technology, with a special focus on data protection, big data, AI, IoT, Industry 4.0 and smart cities. He is member of the editorial boards of Computer Law & Security Review and IDP:Revista d'Internet, Dret i Política, and Associate Editor at European Data Protection Law Review. Professor Mantelero has held visiting appointments at Harvard (Berkman Center for Internet
& Society, 2012), Oxford (Oxford

Institute,
2013 and 2014), Nanjing University of Information Science &
Technology (School of Public Administration, 2013 and 2016) and
